This is what I wore as I gave a talk about my heartbreak as a woman in a patriarchal church in my new ward in San Francisco. (Giving the talk was definitely scarier than wearing the pants, surprisingly, considering I’ve never worn pants to Sunday services in my life.)

The people who talked to me afterwards (and there were many) were all positive about it, thanking me for my authenticity and sharing their own struggles. One man even assured me that my Mother is right here and she will never leave me. The bishop said if he’d known, he would have worn purple, and he asked if he could give my husband and me blessings.
I’m kind of surprised to find that I feel like a bit of the burden is lifted in having shared it. And to make me feel even better, I found out that my sister and her husband also observed the day in their ward.
